For those seeking a quaint island getaway should check out Guernsey. It is the westernmost of the Channel Islands and has as many as 25 beautiful beaches. It is also steeped in history dating as far back as 6000 BC. There are many landmarks and monuments you can visit while walking along cliff-top paths all over the island.

There is evidence of Neolithic farmers settling this area. You can visit one of three archeologically significant menhiers from that time period. The dolmen known as L’Autel du Dehus containing the dolmen deity known as Le Gardien du Tombeau can be seen on Guernsey. Castle Cornet was built 800 years ago and today, has three different museums showing the history of Guernsey. You can participate in daily guided tours followed by gun firing display done by soldiers in period costumes. Vale Castle is another historically significant part of Guernsey’s countryside. Believed to have been built in the 14th century, today it all sits in ruins. It is the location of the yearly Vale Earth Fair music festival that takes place in August.

The German occupation in the 1940’s left behind many reminders in Guernsey. The Plienmont Observation Tower was built by the Germans and is still standing high over the coastline. Standing five stories high, you can get breath-taking panoramic views of the island. If sun and fun are what you are seeking, Guernsey provides plenty of that. You can play in the sun on any of the 25 beaches on the island. Pembroke Beach is on the north part of the island. This beach is perfect for fishing, surfing, swimming and other such water activities. Ladies Bay Beach is another beautiful beach in the north part of the island. The Petit Bot Bay Beach is a significant historical area. You can enjoy the wildlife reserve or go snorkeling or canoeing in the bay. Vazon Beach is popular with families. The magnificent beach is great for beach games and surfing.
