Location and Significance
The area of Fermanagh is one of the six counties within Northern Ireland. Fermanagh has a population around 61,000 and is located in the southwestern most portion of Northern Ireland. The largest town in the region is the county town Enniskillen, with other important population centers including Lisnaskea, Ballinamallard, and Irvinestown. Fermanagh is mostly known for being a rural agriculture economy that is used primarily for grazing, silage, and hay. In addition, the area has two famous bodies of water that cover a large amount of land in the territory, Upper and Lower Lough Erne. The county of Fermanagh is easily within 100 miles of two of the most popular epicenters of Ireland, Belfast and Dublin.

The most popular tourist area in the region is the main town of Enniskillen, which includes a wide variety of attractions. Examples of landmarks in this town include Castle Coole, a late 18th century neo-classical mansion, and Enniskillen Castle, a traditional 16th century walled castle that is now home to the Fermanagh County Museum, which focuses on biological and social history of the Fermanagh area, and the Inniskillings Museum, a local museum depicting military uniforms, relics, and other various memorabilia.
There are many other areas in Fermanagh outside of Enniskillen that routinely attract visitors and tourists as well. The wide network of small waterways in Fermanagh bring a large amount of boating enthusiasts for simple pleasure boating and also for the possibility of fishing on the waterways. Devenish Island, a 1.5 mile long island in the middle of Lower Lough Erne lake, is a popular tourist spot; a ferry from Enniskillen can take travelers to this island, on which are the remnants of a 6th century monastery that was one of the finest monastic sites and centers of knowledge in Northern Ireland.
